Inspired by the synergies of the Asmat people of Papua, New Guinea and the Māori people of New Zealand: Represented is the sacred, living art form signified through permanent markings traditionally known as Thunga-ta-moko. Here, the artist was inspired by an exhibition at The MET depicting Asmat Ancestral Ceremonies with dress incorporating painted barkcloth, carved shields, and patterns consisting of large strokes of interconnected lines and shapes. While the Asmat men will often adorn themselves with paint, shells, seeds, feathers and bones during various rituals to honor their ancestors, the Māori have a custom known as Ja Asamanam Apcamar (Onward with Balance) that focuses on remaining in balance. Together these two distinct ceremonies helped to inform this storied print into existence.

Please note the panels are sold as a Pair.
